See you soon at ELI

Welcome

ELI Laser-Induced Fusion (LIF) Kick-off meeting on 28-29th November 2023

The Extreme Light Infrastructure ERIC (ELI) has launched an initiative in Laser-Induced Fusion (LIF) supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research. A dedicated workshop is planned for 28-29th November 2023 at ELI in Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together academic and industrial actors in LIF and facilitate discussion on the recent developments in the European landscape, identify common strategies to address the new scientific and technological challenges, and the role ELI could play in enabling the development of methods or technology relevant to LIF, particularly, but not exclusively, with key relevant actors in the German research community. This initiative is a first step in the context of wider European activities in this area, with a perspective of launching a wider call for Mission-based access to ELI and ultimately contributing to practical ways to generate laser-based clean energy.

The event will be divided into two sessions with the first day (28 November 2023) focusing on the worldwide laser-fusion landscape, and the second day (29 November 2023) addressing the role of ELI in contributing to methods and technology relevant to LIF in collaboration with key German actors and other potential partners.

Laser-induced fusion has recently been demonstrated in the United States, reaching ignition and burn, with a net energy gain equal to 1.5. This breakthrough has greatly increased interest in laser fusion in many countries, universities, research centres, and private companies. Europe now has a window of opportunity to be a relevant player in such changes by involving the scientific community, industries, and relevant institutions.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in person for some engaged discussions.

The meeting will be divided in two parts:

Part 1 - Tuesday 28, 2023

The laser-fusion world-landscape after ignition demonstration

Section dedicated to an introduction on the status of activities in European countries and institutions that can be relevant for the future of LIF in Europe.

Keynote presentations from worldwide relevant players.

Part 2 - Wednesday 29, 2023

The role of ELI in contributing to methods and technology relevant to LIF in collaboration with key German actor and other potential partners

Series of round tables supported by short presentations with the aim to discuss and clarify possible LIF-related research, experiments, and technological developments at ELI, particularly in collaboration with the German research community, in universities, institutes and industry.
