In this activity students will get a basic hands-on experience of using and characterizing the fiber-based equipment. The following tasks will be covered:
1) Measurement of the numerical aperture of the fiber;
2) Splicing of two fibers using automated Fujikura splicer;
3) Coupling light into the fiber;
4) Characterization of the fiber amplifier in CW mode.
During this course we will touch most of the practical aspects that are usually encountered in the non-specialized laboratories. This will help understanding the use case of the fiber systems and give basic experience in handling them.
