Description

The research involves the design of a proton beamline to be implemented at the Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) laser system in order to achieve a well collimated and monoenergetic beam to be used for a variety of applications. Three beamlines were designed and optimised for a range of proton beam energies using the particle tracing software TraceWin. These consisted of a permanent magnetic quadrupole (PMQ) beamline, a permanent magnetic quadrupole and electromagnetic quadrupole beamline (EMQ), and a solenoid beamline. Error studies were carried out on the three designed beamlines in order to calculate the effect of different errors on the beam, PMQs, EMQs, and solenoids. Variation in bore diameter for the PMQs was studied in order to increase transmission through the beamlines. An overall comparison of quadrupoles versus solenoids was discussed.
