Description
Simulations play a key role in the design of plasma sources, employed for plasma-based accelerators and related applications. However, most simulation tools are proprietary and require costly licenses. We present the open source code PLUTO, which allows users to perform 3D, hydrodynamic (HD) and magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, originally designed for astrophysical plasmas, that we've adapted for simulating gas-filled plasma discharge capillaries. PLUTO effectively models the neutral gas dynamics before ionization and the plasma evolution with a time dependent magnetic field induced by the discharge. The simulations demonstrate good agreement with experimental data.
